a journey through my time
For many years I had in mind a journey which would combine litterature and photography.
My mother had many tales books of ancient Greece ,when I was a kid. All these stories, about passionate, hateful, whimsical gods and humans, all the wars, loves, adventures, fed my mind of little boy, once the light was switched off and I found myself dreaming in bed about Achilles, Centaurs, Cyclops, Athena, the big wall of Troy and …of course Ulysses, the most intriguing hero of the vast greek litterature.
The Odyssey has been handed down in many ways, first orally, then through the first written text, when I was a teenager it was screened on television in a beautiful series, and it has been the subject of differents movies.
I renewed with this story during my latin and litterature lessons in high school, watching greek and roman statues in the museum of my hometown, Rome.
The wire that links me to this masterpiece is very long, I wanted to tribute my fascination to the thousands of images I had in my mind. I wanted to take up this challenge of telling the Odyssey, the most ancient evidence of a cultural heritage, through the most contemporary of our communication media : smartphone
I shot the project entirely with Hipstamatic app with two iPhone (the title iDyssey comes from there). I choose twelve sites, crucial to the work, and retraced the wandering of my hero Ulysses.
A contemporary odyssey that functioned also as an investigation into the Mediterranean identity. Many events are happening around this sea, from Tunisia revolution and Arab springs to the battle between secularism and orthodoxy in Turkey, up to the migrants crisis and economical bankrupt in Greece which has cut the breath to all Europe.
Princess Europe, daughter of the king of Tiro Agenor and mother of Minos.
A contemporary odyssey discovering places which until then parked in my imagination, in search of the voices of the ancients heroes, the sounds of living stones, these places full of harmonious beauty but constantly theatre of the most absolute horrors.
This was my journey, this is what the photos in this book are about: a trip through a wonderful childhood dream, where I come from : Europa-Utopia.
